Summary

Now in paperback, the eighth book of the bestselling Rivers of London series returns to the adventures of Peter Grant, detective and apprentice wizard, as he solves magical crimes in the city of London。

Peter Grant is facing fatherhood, and an uncertain future, with equal amounts of panic and enthusiasm。 Rather than sit around, he takes a job with migr Silicon Valley tech genius Terrence Skinner's brand new London start up--the Serious Cybernetics Company。

Drawn into the orbit of Old Street's famous 'silicon roundabout', Peter must learn how to blend in with people who are both civilians and geekier than he is。 Compared to his last job, Peter thinks it should be a doddle。 But magic is not finished with Mama Grant's favourite son。

Because Terrence Skinner has a secret hidden in the bowels of the SCC。 A technology that stretches back to Ada Lovelace and Charles Babbage, and forward to the future of artificial intelligence。 A secret that is just as magical as it technological--and just as dangerous。

This is better than the last book but the charm of the earlier Peter Grant books is gone for me。 Peter's parents don't really show up, Toby makes only a brief appearance toward the last half, and Molly and Nightingale only make small cameos。 By now, the world has gotten so large and unwieldy that not only are my favorite characters given short shrift, but I had to keep jumping back and forth in the book to remind myself who the characters were。 I wish the author would go back to a more simple pl This is better than the last book but the charm of the earlier Peter Grant books is gone for me。 Peter's parents don't really show up, Toby makes only a brief appearance toward the last half, and Molly and Nightingale only make small cameos。 By now, the world has gotten so large and unwieldy that not only are my favorite characters given short shrift, but I had to keep jumping back and forth in the book to remind myself who the characters were。 I wish the author would go back to a more simple plot with fewer characters, so that we could spend more quality time with them。 。。。more

Another excellent sequel。 Aaronovitch does an amazing job of keeping things fresh and Peter reaches a new stage in his life, which reflects beautifully in the story。 There are, as always, more colourful characters and intriguing developments as Mr。 Aaronovitch's "chekhov's gardenshed" expands evermore。 Also Bev's pregnant! I'm really looking forward to the next book。 (listened to the book on audible。 Stunning performance as always Mr。 Holdbruck-Smith)。 Another excellent sequel。 Aaronovitch does an amazing job of keeping things fresh and Peter reaches a new stage in his life, which reflects beautifully in the story。 There are, as always, more colourful characters and intriguing developments as Mr。 Aaronovitch's "chekhov's gardenshed" expands evermore。 Also Bev's pregnant!

A good program installment in the series once you get past chapter one。

Yet again I am ever so grateful to bookcrossing and Lamilla's spiral。 It allowed me to read this series in order, picking up The Hanging Tree which had been loitering on (hanging on) my TBR shelves unread for a few years, as I realized it was part of a series, and not the first。 It would seem this book is the last in the series, but to be honest I do feel it is somewhat open ended, and I sincerely hope Aaronovitch is already at work on a sequel or two or three。 I really enjoyed this one with its Yet again I am ever so grateful to bookcrossing and Lamilla's spiral。 It allowed me to read this series in order, picking up The Hanging Tree which had been loitering on (hanging on) my TBR shelves unread for a few years, as I realized it was part of a series, and not the first。 It would seem this book is the last in the series, but to be honest I do feel it is somewhat open ended, and I sincerely hope Aaronovitch is already at work on a sequel or two or three。 I really enjoyed this one with its foray into the tech world, Beverley the goddess in every sense of the word, and I had hopes for Keira and Oliver。。。 decidedly space for sequels。 I so enjoy Aaronvitch's characters, writing, and his wit。 Always an excellent read。 。。。more

False Value might be my favorite book of the series so far。 It opens up so many possibilities of expanding the story both globally and historically going forward。 The pace was nonstop compared to the others within the series。 The whole concept of the Mary Engine。。。。 so smart! I wish BA could write, but most importantly, oversee, a whole team of writers that are just chugging out different stories within this created world that all interconnect somehow。 There’s so much ground to be covered now。 I False Value might be my favorite book of the series so far。 It opens up so many possibilities of expanding the story both globally and historically going forward。 The pace was nonstop compared to the others within the series。 The whole concept of the Mary Engine。。。。 so smart! Fine。 Not the best。

The Mary Engine is no joke, American tech and magic take root in Peter Grant's city and the British magic infrastructure continues to grow as does Bev's belly。 No more books stolen from libraries, they've got more modern techniques and references now。 The Mary Engine is no joke, American tech and magic take root in Peter Grant's city and the British magic infrastructure continues to grow as does Bev's belly。 No more books stolen from libraries, they've got more modern techniques and references now。 。。。more

I'm so invested in the Rivers of London series。 This was the first time I had listened to the book before reading it。 As usual, Kobna Holbrook-Smith brings the characters to life and his narration gives great depth。Following the resolution of the Faceless Man story arc in Lies Sleeping, this was always likely to be a transitional book。 I hope for more traditional police procedural next time; Peter is not suited to undercover。 I'm so invested in the Rivers of London series。 This was the first time I had listened to the book before reading it。 As usual, Kobna Holbrook-Smith brings the characters to life and his narration gives great depth。Following the resolution of the Faceless Man story arc in Lies Sleeping, this was always likely to be a transitional book。 I hope for more traditional police procedural next time; Peter is not suited to undercover。 。。。more

The switchen between two close timeperiods was a bit annoying and there was a bit too much Douglas Adams referencing but I still think that this book is one of the best in a very good series

If you’re a die hard fan of the Rivers of London series, and you can get past the numerous Douglas Adams references, you might be able to forgive this installment。 If you’re new to the collection, stop with Lies Sleeping and don’t bother with this book。Having read the others and thoroughly enjoyed them, I found False Value to be dry, boring, and completely lacking a solid plot and storyline。 There’s also a huge shift in narrative voice that makes this feel more like the beginning of a new series If you’re a die hard fan of the Rivers of London series, and you can get past the numerous Douglas Adams references, you might be able to forgive this installment。 If you’re new to the collection, stop with Lies Sleeping and don’t bother with this book。Having read the others and thoroughly enjoyed them, I found False Value to be dry, boring, and completely lacking a solid plot and storyline。 There’s also a huge shift in narrative voice that makes this feel more like the beginning of a new series rather than a continuation of the existing series。 。。。more

Light, fun, another enjoyable entry in the series

Another gripping yarn from the Rivers of London series。 After the enjoyable but underpowered placemarker novella The October Man, this story launches into full-on magic and mayhem from early on, leaving the reader breathless。 A little too much tech detail for my liking, but that didn’t spoil my enjoyment of the tale。 Magic, high tech content, cosy family stuff, much jeapordy, evil baddies: it’s all here for you。 Great stuff。

Ich mag die Figuren und Peters Humor zwischen den Zeilen sehr 😁 Aber die Actionszenen mit ihm und Nightingale feiere ich am allermeisten!!

You have to hand it to Peter Grant; a policeman with a wife who is not only the personification of the of the rivers of London but pregnant with twins。 He is also a trainee magician under the tutelage of Nightingale who has a very intresting past。 If you have followed the series then nothing here is new。 What is new is that Peter has left the Metropolitan Police under a cloud and is now providing private security to an increasingly prominent sillicon start up company that is producing a product You have to hand it to Peter Grant; a policeman with a wife who is not only the personification of the of the rivers of London but pregnant with twins。 He is also a trainee magician under the tutelage of Nightingale who has a very intresting past。 If you have followed the series then nothing here is new。 What is new is that Peter has left the Metropolitan Police under a cloud and is now providing private security to an increasingly prominent sillicon start up company that is producing a product that will revolutionse everything that is chip driven。 It is a direct descendant of Babbage and Lovelace but all Peter can smell is rotting shellfish。As always this is an excellent story of policing, private and public, written with the acerbic wit and panache that I have come to enjoy so much。 The story romps along, the characters all feel very real and the magic is Harry Potter for grown ups。 The relatioinships are as complex and enjoyable as ever and when you throw in the most stereotypical computer geeks (who have named everything in the office building after the Hithchiker's Guide) then there is a wonderful read ahead of you。 。。。more

So good to get back in touch with Peter Grant and the gang。 The change of work for Peter has not taken away anything in my opinion, although I was afraid it would。 Really enjoyed it。

So glad I carried on with it。 I so very nearly gave up on this book。 It starts of jumping between January & the previous December, which means you get told something had happened & then find out what it was。 I found this incredibly disjointed & confusing。 Thankfully it stopped & then the book carried on it the excellent style that all the Peter Grant stories have been told。

I found the first half of this book a little unsatisfying; I'm not really interested in a Temple of High Tech, and the back-and-forth time jumping prevented it from being as pacey as the other books in the series, but the second half, where the proper coppering begins, is just as fun and propulsive as usual。 I found the first half of this book a little unsatisfying; I'm not really interested in a Temple of High Tech, and the back-and-forth time jumping prevented it from being as pacey as the other books in the series, but the second half, where the proper coppering begins, is just as fun and propulsive as usual。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this one (although I had to read synopses of a couple of prior books in the series to reorient myself!) Good mystery, with a decent development of the ongoing story as well。

I enjoyed this jaunt into the world of big money/Big Brother tech for Peter, and especially all the homage paid to geek culture (including, but not limited to, The Hitchhiker's Guide, Doctor Who, and Battlestar Galactica)。 After wrapping up the the previous story line, it was interesting to see where Peter would go next, and Peter vs。 The Singularity is a pretty good plot! 3。5 rounded up。 Since this book came out in 2020, I guess it will be a while before we get another full length Peter Grant novel。 At least I have the Oktoberman on hold so I can read that soon, and might be able to read the Abigail limited edition story somewhere, but neither are full length。

Clever and funny。 Lots of lovely nerd culture and references, the one about Warhammer made me laugh out loud。 Glad I'm up to date with Peter's adventures but sad I have to wait for the next installment。 Clever and funny。 Lots of lovely nerd culture and references, the one about Warhammer made me laugh out loud。 Glad I'm up to date with Peter's adventures but sad I have to wait for the next installment。 。。。more

As a wise man once said - I believe in coincidence, coincidences happen all the time, but I don't trust coincidences。The first part of the book takes places in two different time levels, December explains why we meet Peter Grant in new circumstances in January。 But once the story catches itself, it continues chronologically。 It's an okay story but somehow doesn't quite rise to the same level as previous volumes。 Too modern, perhaps? At least it's lacking London as one of the main characters。 Too As a wise man once said - I believe in coincidence, coincidences happen all the time, but I don't trust coincidences。The first part of the book takes places in two different time levels, December explains why we meet Peter Grant in new circumstances in January。 But once the story catches itself, it continues chronologically。 It's an okay story but somehow doesn't quite rise to the same level as previous volumes。 Too modern, perhaps?
